Career as an IPS Officer

Shankar Jiwal joined the IPS in 1990 as a part of the Tamil Nadu cadre. He started his career as an Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) in Tirunelveli district and then served as the Superintendent of Police (SP) of Dharmapuri and Kancheepuram districts. He was also posted as the Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) of Chennai Central and North zones. He rose to the rank of Inspector General of Police (IGP) and served as the Commissioner of Police of Madurai City and Coimbatore city. He was also the IGP of the Intelligence and Vigilance and Anti-Corruption (V&AC) wings.

In 2016, he was promoted to the rank of Additional Director General of Police (ADGP) and appointed as the Commissioner of Police of Chennai city, the capital of Tamil Nadu. He also introduced several initiatives such as online FIR registration, CCTV surveillance, community policing, women’s helpline, cybercrime cell, traffic management systems, etc.

In 2020, he was transferred as the ADGP of the Crime Branch-Criminal Investigation Department (CB-CID), the premier investigation agency of Tamil Nadu. He supervised many high-profile cases such as the custodial deaths of Jayaraj and Bennix in Sathankulam, the murder of special sub-inspector Wilson in Kanyakumari, the sexual harassment allegations against former minister K.P. Munusamy, etc.

In 2021, he was elevated to the rank of DGP and appointed as the head of the Tamil Nadu police force by the newly elected DMK government led by M.K. Stalin. He is the first IPS officer from Uttarakhand to become the DGP of Tamil Nadu.
