Mauree Turner (born in 1993) is a Criminal Justice Organizer at ACLU of Oklahoma, United States. She came into the limelight after the news of her winning as Nonbinary State Legislator went viral on the internet. Moreover, she is the first Muslim Lawmaker in the United States’ history.
The 27-year-old Muslim political newcomer knocked out Republican Kelly Barlean for the seat. In the massively Republican state, Turner’s division which includes Oklahoma City tends solidly Democratic.

She also added that there have been no Black or Latinx representatives in Oklahoma’s 88th district. However, in the district almost about 20% are Latinx and 10% are Black.
The new winner will now follow the tracks of trailblazing queer representatives Al McAffrey, who served from the year 2007 to 2012. He was the first openly gay person in the state’s legislature. McAffrey was followed by Kay Floyd who is openly lesbian and served until 2014.
