Maria Butina (born November 10, 1988) is a Russian Political Activist from Barnaul, Altai Krai. She is accused of acting as an unregistered Russian agent, under 18 U.S.C. §951, in the USA. Furthermore, the 30-year-old activist is also the founder of a Russian Group named “Right to Bear Arms“.
At the age of 19, she elected to the Public Council of Altai Krai in the last direct election for the Council. Butina also started her furniture retail business in Altai Krai when she was just 21-year-old.
Maria also worked for Aleksandr Torshin in 2011. He is a former member of the Federation Council. In fact, Torshin also remained a member of Vladimir Putin’s United Russia party. Moreover, Butina said to the Senate Intelligence Committee that Konstantin Nikolaev (a Russian billionaire) contributed funding for her group.
In addition, Maria arrested in July 2018 by the Federal Bureau of Investigation. Later, she charged for the crime. However, the activist intends to change her plea of not guilty in a plea deal on December 10, 2018.
