Katie Bouman (born in 1989) is an American Imaging Scientist, MIT Graduate Student and Assistant Professor from West Lafayette, Indiana. She became famous after developing an algorithm that made possible to capture the first-ever image of a black hole.
Furthermore, the 29-year-old scientist used the Event Horizon Telescope to make this happen. On April 10, 2019, a team of more than 200 researchers revealed the photo of a black hole. 5 petabytes (5,242,880 Gigabytes) of memory took place to image the black hole.

Katie developed the main algorithm that served devise imaging methods. Moreover, she started her research three years that eventually paid her off. The photograph shows a huge black hole and its shadow at the center of a galaxy is called M87.
In addition, a global network of telescopes called “the Event Horizon Telescope project” was the main instrument for this task. It collected millions of gigabytes of data about M87 using a technique known as interferometry. However, there were still long breaks in the data that required to be filled in.
Katie originated an algorithm “Continuous High-resolution Image Reconstruction” using Patch priors. In fact, Vincent Fish (a research scientist at MIT’s Haystack Observatory) claimed that Bouman remained the main part of one of the imaging subteams.
