In the December of 2020, an election for the GHMC Council was headed by the Hyderabad District Collector Swetha Mohanty as the presiding officer. The election took place on the 1st of December 2020, the result of which was announced on 4th December 2020.
A lot of speculations were made until February 10, 2021 ( the day when the term of the previous GHMC Council ended) as to who will stand on the position of Mayor. Gadwal Vijayalakshmi defeated all the other candidates to be the second-time corporator from the Banjara Hill division.
Out of the 150 seats she managed to capture 56 leaving behind BJP (48 seats), AIMIM (44 seats), and Congress (2 seats). After winning she said that she would make Hyderabad a safe place for women. And would also work for the water and drainage issues.
