The Kenyan acting industry is in mourning following the death of Charles Ouda, popularly known as Charlie, on the night of February 3, 2024. He was 38 years old.
A Beloved Son, Brother, and Friend
Ouda’s family and fiancée, media personality Ciru Muriuki, announced his passing in a statement on Sunday, February 4, 2024. They described him as a beloved son, brother, and friend, and requested for privacy and space to grieve this unfathomable loss.
“Charles Ouda was 38 years old. We appeal to all to give his fiancée Ciru, and the Oudas space to grieve this unfathomable loss. More details will be given in due course. Once again, we urge all to respect the privacy of those involved,” the statement read.
Ouda and Muriuki had joyfully announced their engagement in September 2023, enchanting many with their endearing moments. They had been dating for over a year and were planning to tie the knot soon.

A Gifted Actor, Director, and Scriptwriter
Charles Ouda was renowned for his noteworthy contributions to diverse film projects, both in Kenya and abroad. He started his acting career in 2006, appearing in TV shows such as the kid’s show Know Zone, Makutano Junction, Changing Times, Count it Out, and The First Grader.
He also ventured into film directing and scriptwriting, showcasing his outstanding abilities and garnering numerous accolades. He won the prestigious title of Best Director at the 2016 Asian American Film Lab 72 Hour Shoot Out and multiple awards from the NYC Indie Film Awards.

Some of his notable works as a director and scriptwriter include The Silent Treatment, The Last Day, and The Audition. He also co-wrote and co-produced the award-winning film Kibera Kid, which was screened at the Cannes Film Festival in 2007.
Ouda was passionate about mentoring and inspiring young aspiring actors and filmmakers. He founded the Charlie Ouda Acting Academy in 2018, where he offered training and coaching to budding talent. He also collaborated with various organizations and institutions to promote the growth and development of the Kenyan film industry.
